The Flash #20 & #21. Because there's really nothing like watching a superhero eat a soggy pretzel off the sidewalk.

Early on as the Flash, Wally won the lottery, and life was good. Got a mansion, nights on the town, whole bit. And then he lost it all. Everything gets repossessed, he moves into a tiny apartment with his mother.

One night, a homeless dude camps out in the hallway. Wally calls the cops. Things don't work out the way he planned.

Yeah, remember Wally's whole anger problem?

So he and his mom are out on the street, with just the clothes on their back. And Mary picks a great time to let him know that the JLI has been trying to get in contact with him for a week...

This is the point where things go downhill fast. Wally's night just keeps getting worse and worse...

Is that not the saddest thing you've ever seen? Things perk up a bit from here. A bit.

Right. So, about Piper....

I understand that you're gay, dude. But isn't it a bit gratuitous to be wandering around the streets dressed like that? And talking about men in uniform?

And then, of course, aliens invade.

Alien probe alert! That exploration sounds very uncomfortable.

Damn I love comic books.

In the next issue, Wally finally gets a hold of the JLI. After begging for change on the street.

I have a few ideas what it would take for him to get those quarters... muhahaha...

And, because Wally is a big man-whore, he gets laid. She tries to kill him later, but meh. Beggars can't be choosers, ba-zing!

Wally may be a man-whore here, but we both know the biggest manwhores are Dick and Roy!! Lol! How are you?

Good...grife, that's a ham-handed exploration of the Plight of the Homeless. Though Piper is damn cute, gotta say.

And then, of course, aliens invade.

Isn't that always the way? Just when you're really getting on a roll about how we have to have Empathy for Those Less Fortunate, There But For the Grace of God...aliens.

We can't let gritty real-world issues get in the way of the real point; aliens!

I think every comic book run has that issue or two that's all a heavy-handed public awareness statement. Throwing random racism into a Superman book or something. Green Arrow is the only one that ever made that stuff actually seem like it fit in the series, heh.

Also, Wally really needed to get taken down a couple pegs. Seriously. XD

Wow, wish I had that energy. But I'm not sure if they'd appreciate it in class today. Ugh...I think I've over eaten. But I must finish these...noodles...*falls over*

Yay Superman vs The Klan!

But seriously, Racism should fit extremely well into Superman. After all, he is of a different race (hell, a different species) and is an illegal immigrant.

In much the same way that the War on Drugs should fit very well into Captain America - after all, he gained his power through illegal drugs.

You familiar at all with the villain Bloodsport? He was used, in one issue in particular, as a total heavy-handed bit on racism. Went around killing off the non-Aryan populous and made Clark a very unhappy Superman, complete with cheesy dialogue and the token black guy that worked at the Daily Planet. ::sigh::

No. I tend to stay away from Superman. It preaches too much and I don't get a sense of worry from it. My point was that it should fit well into Superman, not that it did.
