Victorian-era Bat-Man!

shankieOnce upon a time there was this little tale called Gotham By Gaslight. Not only the first Elseworlds, the first Elseworlds I ever read, because my awesome friend Care has a copy. I came for the steampunk and stayed for the awesome.
I figure this is a good time, since the crew traveling the 52 worlds just made a visit. But first, the original story.
Bruce Wayne has been studying in Europe with the greatest minds of the day, such as Freud, and we begin with Mr. "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" trying to psycho-analyze Bruce. As if.

Best part? The artwork. Wayne Manor never looked so good, in my humble opinion.
The Joker is creepy as fuck, as ever.
Also? This story makes it glaringly obvious, from Jim Gordon's perspective, that Bruce Wayne = Bat-Man, because he knows he studied criminology for years. He never figures it out, as far as the reader is led to believe.
Bruce being arrested for the very crime he's trying to solve? Heh. Through the investigation and trial, he's totally confidant there's no case.
Obviously, he's wrong.
But luckily for him, Gordon doesn't believe he did it, and lends a hand.
Bruce goes a little nutty in prison. The scrawl on the wall reminds me of something an Arkham inmate would do.
Of course he solves the crime and breaks out of jail. Cue awesome chase scene!
The sequel, Master of the Future, is way more steampunk and interesting, in my opinion.
Steampunk!
It has a completely insane bad-guy with an awesome zeppelin and a robot, Bruce fighting in a ring, and sword fighting!
AWESOME.
Meanwhile, Bruce's fiancee` is totally in love with Bat-Man, but of course she doesn't know who he really is.
The insane appearance of the bad guy and Julie's little infatuation don't bring Bats out of retirement; Jim does.
Of course. :D
The robot's name is Signor Antonio Diavolo. Really. ::heart::
Amidst the chaos of the bombing of Gotham, of course, Bruce has to save his woman.
So awesome it hurts. :D
Okay, I'll admit, Bruce never looks creepy to me. Except that one panel.
Now, Countdown Presents The Search For Ray Palmer: Gotham By Gaslight.
I'm so impressed at the treatment of this world, since I was totally expecting it to suck.
Kicking it off with Jason Todd on a frigate helped with that. A LOT.

Have I mentioned adoring this costume? ::huggles action figure::
That's not Ted, by the way. It's Dan Garrett, the original Blue Beetle. Which works for this world, I think.
I think I'd pass out from joy if they ever made a series out of this world. With Jason becoming Bruce's side-kick. They certainly insinuate that it's his world of origin enough, all he can think about is how he 'belongs here' and stuff. ::shrug:: That's just a speculation, of course.
