I wanted to check out references to this whole 5th World thing; I went through Morrison's run of JLA with an eye for that (among other things.) I remembered Metron having said something about it... and that's exactly what I found.

"Rock of Ages" was the JLA story where in the present the League is fighting Luthor's Injustice Gang, while in the future Aquaman, Flash, and Green Lantern are thrown into an Earth where Darkseid has won and enslaved the population, making it New Apokolips. His choice of Earth over other places to focus on doing this is interesting.

Partially responsible for this, Metron makes the inference of Earth being something cosmically important an outright textual statement in issue #15.

This is why Orion and Big Barda then join the League, albeit a bit... reluctantly. As seen a few times, and here in #20...

Takion is currently Highfather; this is after Izaya's death.

Metron comes back to Earth for World War III. He's seen here in #38 giving Barbara (currently a member of the League as Oracle) a Mother Box to fight off the impending doom, while revealing he's freelancing to help Earth survive to it's destiny.

Issues #40 & #41, respectively.

It all strikes me as saying this process is going to happen after humanity itself evolves more; like, thousands of years in the future.

But, there you are.

ETA: Sometime completely unrelated caught my attention in this post.

That's a lot of very tight costumes. And Batman's the one to catch the text bubble. Heh.

"I'm sorry, Metron, come again? You were saying something about the fate of the world?"

You come up with the coolest stuff. I grew up on Marvel so seeing this stuff is new and shiny.

Now cue in music... *Cough*

"Rock of ages, rock of ages
Still rollin, keep a-rollin
Rock of ages, rock of ages
Still rollin, rocknrollin..."

You know you can't say that and I don't comment this way.

Hmm, why do I have a feeling of doing this before...

I can't say enough good about JLA, I mean, it's what made me get into reading more than Superman, Batman, and The Flash. I mean, they later let Byrne do a story about vampires. Hee!

I love that song.

And I generally blame deja vu on time travelers. Those damned time travelers.

I'm too hypnotized by Wally's ass to notice anything else. Mmmm...

He totally knows it, too. Look at him. ::laughs:: Flexing it just a little, showing off. You know, as usual. XD

They're all kinda screaming "Look at me!"

True, but Wally's the most captivating. Simple too. Just red with a touch of yellow. Blue supes and Aquaman have some duo-colour action going on.

Hm. So the Death of the New Gods is actually just the inevitable precursor to the Rise of the... Newer Gods? That's interesting.
