1001 Emerald Nights

I updated the superheroes in drag post with this little gem, and figured I could give some context. Very pretty context.

1001 Emerald Nights is an Elseworlds that focuses on a figurehead sultan (a silly Kyle that learns to be a man and take back his throne) but it's the story told to him, about Al Jhor Dan, that I liked the most about it.



Not only gorgeous, but full of nifty appearances from the Corps; including Kilowog the genie. :D





He does all sorts of good with his lamp, stands up to the sultan, and gets beat down by the vizier and tossed into jail for his trouble. Good thing the ladies love him.







The happy times don't last; he has to go on a quest to get back his lamp, and his wife. Fun adventures involving cross-dressing and Arthur with hot mermaid concubines ensue.





The thugs tear themselves apart over Hal in a dress. Heh.

As far as Elseworlds stories go, this is not only the prettiest, but very entertaining and full of spiffy nods to canon. They even make reference to all of Kyle's women going to an early grave, all while keeping the feel of a legend in the vein of Arabian Nights. Much love.

The art work is really gorgeous. I haven't read much of the Elseworlds mainly because my tiny brain has enough problems processing the 'normal' universe. xDDD

But it definitely looks worth a trip down to the comics store to see what I can find. A brand new shiny comics store has opened in my town the first one ever so I'm kinda on a high at the moment. nn

I find the best Elseworlds are the ones that manage to make a world that can stand entirely on it's own; unfortunately, most don't really succeed. Not entirely.

The art is by a Rebecca Guay; Wiki tells me she does a lot of work for White Wolf, Magic cards, D&D, stuff like that. Come to think of it... I'm pretty sure I've seen a lot of her work in my geekdom.

Definitely gives Shogun of Steel a run for it's money as the prettiest Elseworlds... Leatherwing the pirate's up there, too, but yeah. :D

Hey, they actually preserved more of the original Aladdin story than the Disney version did! Points to them for that.

I love Rebecca Guay's artwork. I wish she did more comic books.
