Star Trek: Year Four

So I'm a life-long Star Trek fan. One day, I went looking for comics. The most impressive thing I've found is published by IDW, who does a lot of comics based on TV shows and such. (You might know them from the most excellent Zombies vs. Robots.) Star Trek: Year Four is 6-issue series, an attempt to continue with the original series by keeping the spirit and tone of the show. They do a most excellent job.

Cliches are kept, even some of Kirk's silly facial expressions and random uniform changes grace the adventures of the Enterprise.
Most of the art is by Steve Conley; and I think it's just perfect.

Seriously, check out the how the art is! The colours of simple backgrounds adding to the tone of the character's dialogue in brilliant fashion, this very simplistic 60's pop-art feel that sets a great tone for a lover of the show. Not to mention how faithfully the characters are used.

I'm totally a Spock/McCoy girl, by the way. :D
In issue #4, they get trapped on a planet who's commerce, law, and culture are totally based on entertainment; specifically, television. It's one of those stories that reflects very clearly on American culture through thinly-veiled alien analogues. It's also fun as hell, as the crew of the Enterprise gets forced into performing for their captors... after an escape that's not actually an escape.

Bones is teh awesome. :D

Oh, Kirk.
Can you guess which person in that scene doesn't survive the comic? ::giggles::

Does that robot look a suspicious lot like Granny Goodness... or is it just me?

Oh, Spock. :D
This series is finished, but, IDW has rights to publish all kinds of Star Trek comics; and they are. At the moment I'm following TNG: Intelligence Gathering and giving New Frontier a go. A Mirror Universe comic is planned (woo woo!) as well as a follow-up to the episode "The Enterprise Experiment" and other things. Good stuff.

on 2008-04-11 12:57 pm (UTC)I adored the original series and some of the movies. The artwork is really gorgeous as well. I'm going to have a look on Ebay to see if I can root some of these babies out.
Gotta feel sorry for anyone who pulls on a red jumper though. They must see it and go 'Shit my time is up'. Its the kiss of death. xD

on 2008-04-11 04:36 pm (UTC)They mostly look like someone watched one episode on mute before making them. (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m27/victoria_wayne/goldkeyspock.jpg)
Fortunately, Year Four is available as a TPB on Amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Year-Four-Idw/dp/1600101615/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207931655&sr=8-1) :D
