Today is, apparently, Jason Todd's birthday.

Early this morning I was going through some random issues of Action Comics, and came across this one. From 1987, Robin meets Superman for the first time.

For today, I'm going to pretend that one issue of Nightwing just never happened.

Nightwing #122 (http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/2189222.html), aka, the "Jason is a huge disgusting blob that eats people" issue.

LMAO! Jason was turned on in Supes's presence. *shakes head*

Super-hard fingernail? LOL. Oh Clark, you kill me. That was pathetic.

It was indeed. But think of it this way; Clark's toenail clippings could be used as a replacement for diamonds in drillbits. And they never explain how he can have short hair. I get how he shaves; is that what he does to trim his hair? And if so, does that take like, days on end to do?

I think about this sort of thing quite a bit. XD

Following that logic, how does he clip his finger and toenails? Clippers wouldn't work cos of his super-hard fingernails, and his laser vision doesn't work on himself. And yeah, hair - how does all of this work?

I bought two Superman folders today for college. :D

Yeah, see? You can go on for hours about this stuff. His vision is how he shaves his face, so I can only imagine he could do the same thing for toenails. I bet it takes like, an hour to do it, though.

But hair is like.... how would that work? Mirrors? Does he have Lois hold it up and angle it around? ::boggles::

Yay folders! I bought a Superman blanket for my car, Clark, but it's so nice and soft I kinda want it in the house... but it looks so damn cool draped over the back seat!

Hee! It was fun, because I stayed ther and chatted with the cashier and this ten year old behind me about the new movie. Then the kid started singing some weird Super-song that wasn't anything I've ever heard, and I decided it was time to leave.

And are there any weird Superman/Clark hairstyles in the comics? Because if so, we know that your mirror theory is correct and those hairstyles were from, ah, practice. 0_o

I'm convinced that's why he grew his hair out in the 90's.

Um. I'm pretending that nothing's happened in Nightwing since Issue 115*, if not Issue 100. And there's an alternate history from Nightwing 107 to Nightwing 124 (I trust Marv Wolfman to pick it up again at issue 125). Actually, can I just roll the entire Bat family with the exception of the Birds to pre- War Games and have an alternate history from there please?

But there are reasons people voted to kill off Jason...

* Getting engaged to Babs then disappearing for a whole year with nothing being mentioned is the real icing on the cake.

Yeah, the Babs thing wtf. My friend who's big into those two was pissed.

I'm not a Dick and Babs fan - I like them both but that relationship is pretty clearly dysfunctional with them both wating a Robin/Batgirl relationship and trying to hang onto that - but the only thing that makes any sense is that even up until Nightwing 117, it was meant to be Dick rather than Kon killed in the Crisis (and the new Nightwing being Jason). Even if that is the case, both Dick and Babs should deal with that proposal and vanishing in their own books rather than simply ignore it.

OMG, this was sooooo corny! No wonder Supes has such a bad rap. And what did they do to Batman? Where's *our* Batman, you know, the one that's the *ass*? DC's historical record is just too cracktastic. :)))

Totally. For the longest time, I hadn't read more than a couple issues of anything published after 1991. ::laughs::

Hee, Jason's reaction, "Wow!", is perfect. Like, awesomely so. In the second panel of the third scan, it's the greatest.

Sigh, juxtaposing these scans with the Nightwing scans is just heartbreaking. I hate current DC so much, I really do. I'm pretty much just reading comics from 10 years ago and trying to ignore all the current stuff. And the old comics are corny but fabulous, when heroes were Heroes, not just big balls o'angst. I never really understood the movement towards gritty "realistic" comics where characters get killed off by the boatload so that the other characters can be all angsty and badass. If we want depressing we can turn on the news, and if we want dark comics we can go read Punisher. I want DC to be happy again.
/rant.

Yup. Whenever I'm bummed, I just go read my favourite comic book ever; And Graves Give Up Their Dead..., Action Comics #585. That's freakin' SUPERMAN.

::sigh:: As much as I do love a lot of what's coming out recently, there's so much ANGST. And I'm the Queen of Angst over here, but even I think it's a little much.
