1971. Kirby begins writing and pencilling Mister Miracle, starring Scott Free, who becomes Mister Miracle II when the first is murdered. He avenges the death and begins an awesome series of adventures both on Earth and Apokolips, and is reunited with the warrior who freed him from Granny Goodness; Big Barda, one of Darkseid's elite guard.

Early issues had some crazy situations, where out of context panels are just nuts, so I'm throwing some of those in. This is all after Barda enters the comic issue #4. While she's portrayed as highly sexual and beautiful, she's the heavy lifter; she's the warrior. Scott wears aprons and makes dinner for everyone.

It's not until issue #9 that we're shown Scott and Barda's history, and not until #14, a wacky story involving satanists of all people, that the first inkling of a romance between the two comes up. After that, their interaction becomes much more played up, with fabulous exchanges.

Before this issue, the only hints at a connexion are moments such as this, just before going to Apokolips with uncertain fates. That is slow to change.

The next issue, #15, introduces Shilo Norman to the cast; he's under protective custody as a witness against the mobsters who killed the first Mister Miracle, and Scott and Barda offer to protect him, as they have a common goal. He proves himself to have picked up quite a bit, and becomes Scott's protoge`.

And Barda never fails to let us know who's in charge...

Note that the bad guy just called Shilo a "fink"... XD

That last one is so my favourite page of Scott being badass.

So if you're wondering when, exactly, Scott and Barda are going to get hitched, that's issue #18; the final of the first run. While under attack, Scott rescues Barda and they're stuck in a foxhole. They admit they love each other, and decide to get married right away.

So they do. No wedding dress, no big plans, they just go back to New Genesis and get married by Highfather. And Darkseid shows up to get the last laugh. Literally.

And Scott and Barda, now married, stay on New Genesis, leaving Oberon and Shilo behind. For now.

And, I'll end this with random kicking.

Oberon is so cool.

Yup. Mister Miracle and Big Barda rock.

Barda rocks very, very hard. You make me love her very much.

Two random non-Barda comments (which is unfair, she deserves more attention):

1. "Nothing can be hidden from one such as I, Scott Free! Your telephone number is known to me!"
Ah...Mister Miracle's superpower...he can use www.whitepages.com.

2. The more I see of original new Gods writing, the more I realize [livejournal.com profile] damo_in_japan is dead on with his tone in the Dark-lactus series. "The face they saw was granite-hard--and the eyes in it were fixed on the limitless! 'It had deep sentiment--but little joy: But--Life at best is bittersweet! HAHAHAHAHA!'"

Oh, Darkseid, honey...you and G have quarreled again, haven't you? It's ok, you can admit how much it hurts...

*pats unhappy New God. Gingerly*

That was actually the cheeziest supervillain ever, calling Scott to arrange a duel. Heh. Oh Apokolips, your people are so wacky.

And that's why I love Darklactus so damn much. New Gods is always SO over the top it's unbelievable.

And fantastic. XD
